Flickasbord, Volume 73

When it comes to either anticipating movies that could be eventual Flickuum evaluations or the recency of evaluating certain movies, other movies tend to come out of the woodwork, thus both scenarios becoming true yet again last week. So, with all of that being said, let’s begin.

Being a fan of the John Wick franchise, I naturally gravitate towards anything inspired by the second Keanu Reeves-led franchise, as many movies inspired by that franchise have punched tickets into The Flickuum Project, with “Female Fight Squad” being the most recent example of that. And with that being said, the next such John Wick-inspired movie that could punch its ticket into The Project is a movie called “The Killer’s Game”, which puts Dave Bautista in the leading role of a movie that is both as edgy as any of the John Wick installments and as bat shit insane as “Boy Kills World”. And given that I like those five movies, you can count on me seeing Dave Bautista’s new movie this coming September.

Certain actresses leave people like me wanting more, with Melissa Barrera and Marisa Abela coming to mind. And now you can add Bianca A. Santos to that list, as she’s hands down my favorite character in the movie “The DUFF”. However, the latter of the three’s filmography doesn’t have much to choose from outside of both “The DUFF” and “Priceless”. Still, my insistence to find more movies of hers for The Project didn’t deter me, thus I scoured her IMDB page, which in turn led to me taking a flier on one of those other movies of hers. And as to what that movie was/is, well it was/is “Stronghold”, which puts her in the leading role and looking sexy with that wavy hair. Now let’s see if that movie can be her third in The Project.

Window shopping (and actual shopping) is something that I do quite often at any Barnes-N-Noble location, as I look for the deals on anything that I plan to add to my collection and with this most Wednesday being the latest example of that. But of course, I couldn’t find such a deal, but I did find a Denis Leary movie that I’ve been meaning to see for almost 20 years, with that movie being “The Ref”. Of course, I didn’t buy it as a hard copy assessment, but I did make a mental note of adding (I did) it to my assessment/re-assessment roster, especially since I want to see him in a post-Judgment Night movie that puts him in a much better light. Now let’s see if that better light shines its way into The Project.

A movie that I got mixed up with “Gifted” was the Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson co-led movie “Wonder”, as it’s another 2010s movie about an intellectually brilliant kid. But unlike the former of the two movies, the latter of the two movies was something that I was on the fence about, due to the pairing of Roberts and Wilson. And of course, the operative word here is “was”, as it turns out that “White Bird” serves as both a prequel and sequel to the latter, thus the latter has joined “The Ref” on my assessment/re-assessment roster.

Back to the topic of fliers, I was very hesitant to see the movie “Till” because of the upsetting nature about Emmett Till’s death. But after realizing that Emmett Till was as significant as Martin Luther Jr., Malcolm X and Medgar Evers in the Civil Rights Movement, I decided to add the 2022 movie to my assessment/re-assessment roster as well.

And finally, the last name “Shyamalan” has caused a lot of mixed opinions for me, as for every “Unbreakable”, there’s a “Lady In The Water”, both of which were directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Plus, he has directed two movies that I’m hesitant to see, with them being “Old” and “Knock At The Cabin”. And of course, he is no longer the only Shyamalan that’s directing movies, as his daughter Ishana made her directorial debut this year with “The Watchers”, a movie that I had a meh demeanor about via seeing its trailer. But after coming away with the thought that I will be rooting for Mina (Dakota Fanning) and her pet bird, I have decided to add the movie to my 2024 theatrical tour.

Well, assessments/re-assessments have slowed down considerably since this most recent Memorial Day, due to my vow to resume Flickuum evaluations no matter what. But now that my goal of getting to 1,100 completed evaluations on July 4 is well within reach, I can find time between now and New Year’s Day 2025 to get the six pending assessments/re-assessments (among others) done, so that I can see if any of them will eventually join the special group of enshrined Flickuum movies, which currently stands at 1,088.

Until the next time.
