With a somewhat substantial surplus of open pre-Dream Scenario Flickuum spots, adding to the assessment/re-assessment roster was going to be eventual, especially since I’ve gone 0-for-12 with assessments/re-assessments since January 18 of this year. And of course, with that being said, that 12 might increase, thus making most of the crux of this entry a wise decision in advance.
Let’s begin.
First up, reneging on no more pardons from the Movie-Ocrity/Dishonorable Mention page has been a vow that I’ve struggled in upholding, due to certain movies living rent-free in my head with the various reasons why they should join a group that was last extended by “Over The Hedge”. But that struggle will come to an end once today’s Nog Report has been posted, as only four of the 1,963 movies that were on that page (prior to this entry being written) each gave me a reason why they have been pardoned. And as to what those four movies are, well you can find out via the chart below:
Movie | Why it has been pardoned |
Punch-Drunk Love | This movie paved the way for Adam Sandler’s excellent serious acting work in “Spanglish”, “Reign Over Me”, “Men, Women & Children” and “Uncut Gems”. |
Challengers | This movie is twisted, but the pay-off involving all three main characters is worth re-investigating. |
Machete | The aspect of Steven Seagal playing a memorable villain on its own makes this movie completely deserving of a re-assessment. |
Arbitrage | The presence of Brit Marling is a perfectly valid excuse in re-assessing this movie. |
Next up, I’ve seen countless videos of both “Night Swim” and “The Strangers: Chapter 1” being ripped for the same reason, which is characters consistently making dumb decisions. But I actually like “Night Swim”, so I can let the dumb decision shit slide in that movie, especially since dumb decisions are going to happen in horror movies. So, of course, with all of that being said, I’m going to take a flier on the latter of the two movies because I think it could outrank the former. And should that prediction ring true, then I’m going to see Chapter 2 this calendar year.
When hasn’t there been a mention of A24 in these Flickasbord entries? I mean every time that I have an A24 rankings video on in the background, another movie that I might have not been interested in seeing all of a sudden becomes one that I do want to see, i.e. “Swiss Army Man”. But A] I blogged about that movie yesterday and B] This paragraph is about a different A24 movie. And as to what that different A24 movie is, well it’s “C’Mon C’Mon”, which I’ve added to the roster, due to it resonating with me via the uncle-nephew dynamic. Here’s hoping to that this Joaquin Phoenix A24 movie is better than “Beau Is Afraid”.
It’s been a while since I’ve added a movie to the Movies That Mega Tat Refuses To See page. But after hearing about the cringe musical aspect about the over-hyped “Emilia Perez”, I’ve decided that I’m not going to waste two-plus hours of my life watching it, thus the movie with an overly bloated total of 13 Oscar nominations has been added to that page.
When it comes to Julianne Hough, I’ve seen all but two of her movies, with one being “Grease Live!”, which was televised in front of a live audience, and the other one being “The Steam Engines Of Oz”. But of course, I find the “in front of a live audience” aspect to be way too distracting, which negates the former as a movie to me, thus truly leaving only the latter as the one that I haven’t seen. But that is going to change, as the aforementioned latter has been added to the roster.
It’s been a while since I’ve ruled a movie (that I’ve seen theatrically) as likely successful, due to A] Both “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “A Complete Unknown” being the current hostages of the idiocy, known as the discontinuation of VideoETA and B] Me needing to re-watch “Nosferatu” since I fell asleep during some of it in the auditorium that I saw it in. But thanks to a magazine article that I saw online this morning, that drought has come to an end, as it was announced in that article that “Moana 2” is getting a physical copy release on March 18, thus making it the 46th movie that is completely eligible to graduate to Tier 5. Can I get a chee-hoo?
And finally, in another item pertaining to Brit Marling, I’ve gone back and forth about whether to assess her movie “Sound Of My Voice” or not. But after finding out that her character in that movie is slightly different from what type of character that she usually plays, I’ve decided to take a flier on it. Now let’s see if that movie can join “Posthumous”, “The Company You Keep” and “Another Earth” in The Project.
Well, the roster is now at +7, due to two of the nine additions taking the spots of “Agent Crush” and “Awakenings”, thus putting the amount of open pre-Dream Scenario spots at 98. But I’m pretty sure that the latter number will get back to 100 (and possibly more), because recent assessments/re-assessments have proved that not everything on the roster is guaranteed to make it.
Until the next time.
