Definition Be Damned, Part 1

**Note: The following content has adult wording. Discretion is advised

From the afternoon of the Sunday after Thanksgiving all the way to yesterday morning, I witnessed an all-time high of movie assessment/re-assessment futility, as all but both Melissa Barrera-Jenna Ortega “Scream” movies and the 2016 movie “The Land” all showed themselves to be unworthy of competing NIT tournament style for the vacated Catch-22 Hundred spots of both Saltburn and Next Goal Wins. So, given all of that, along with possibility that neither of those three movies nor the fourth worthy movie (At Eternity’s Gate) are guaranteed to win any of those two tournaments against the rest of that futile field, I’ve decided to go with a new spot-fill format, which is having 10 movies (with one on stand-by) for each tournament and having the 10 tournament movies each compete against the 73 movies that the aforementioned At Eternity’s Gate is ranked ahead of in Tier 12. And that’s not all because in addition, all 10 movies will be ranked from 1 to 10, based on their win-loss records after they all complete the 73 matches, followed by A] The seventh and eighth ranked movies battling for the seventh seed and B] The loser of the seven-eight matchup playing the winner of the nine-seed vs. ten-seed matchup for the eighth and final seed.

Of course, five of the 11 combined movies have already been selected, with the four that I mentioned in the previous paragraph being four of them and Richard Jewell being the fifth one, on the basis of it being as deserving as Patriots Day of being a part of Catch-22 Hundred lore. So, with all of that being said, six more spots need to be filled for the two tournaments and they need to be filled with competent movies, which is a rarity these days. But the definition of insanity be damned because I like my chances of finding six competent movies way more than finding 28 competent movies. Or better yet, five movies because Reminiscence will be in the field after its re-assessment, because it seems like both a good Thursday night movie and a good movie to watch before a viewing of the Saved By The Bell episode “The Prom”. Plus, that movie could very well be better than The Land, as they are both Natalie Martinez movies.

So, the addition of Reminiscence means that five spots remain open, which judging by what has happened recently, could be a very unfortunate luck of the draw. But like I said, definition of insanity be damned, as I’m confident that I can find five more competent movies for those spots. And as a matter of fact, I’ve compiled a group of five movies that I think can collectively get that job done. And of course, you can find out which movies that they are via the typical chart format:

MovieWhy it could be competent
The Last RideWhen it comes to Nadine Velazquez, the movies in which she has a substantial role tend to succeed. This movie could be the next one to achieve such a feat.
Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole ChristmasIt’s December, so might as well have this Christmas movie in this group of five assessments. Plus, it could be a pleasant surprise.
The Harder They FallIdris Elba Netflix released movies have had mixed results, with Concrete Cowboy passing its assessment and Beasts Of No Nation failing it assessment. This movie could trend in the former of the two directions, as they are both cowboy movies that were released in close proximity of one another.
Silent NightThis movie will be assessed theatrically tomorrow, so it could lose the advantage of being a 2,141 through 2,150 movie. But given it’s John Wick-esque plot, that could also be a good thing.
NumbThis could be Marie Avgeropoulos’ last immediate chance of having a fourth movie of hers pass assessment.

Yes, getting a competent field has been easier said than done, but I’m pretty sure that there won’t be 0-for-5 situation in this chart group. But in the event that four (The Last Ride won’t be accessible until next week) of the five don’t pan out this week, then the definition of insanity will continue. But let’s hope that that doesn’t happen this time around.

Stay tuned.
